They are great for defining a space with a specific purpose or décor theme. Area rugs are actually the "foundation" of your decor, and other items such as sofa, throw cushions etc.. can be build around it. One of the best places to show off your decor style with area rugs is the living room. They can bring so much personality and warmth to a room - both in appearance and texturally. A classic example for a living room is to frame" your lounge setting by using an area rug to define the sofa a coffee table space. As a rule of thumb, the area rug should extend about one foot beyond your area, as defined by the width of the sofa or edge of the coffee table.
